The HomeFront Strong Storytelling Project's unique approach to storytelling emphasizes community building, camaraderie, and creativity. We don't just want to document your time in service, we want to capture the many stories of resilience experienced by all service members, veterans, and their family members across all branches, service eras, and service statuses. At HomeFront Strong, it's about the process just as much as it is about the product.
Storytelling is the heart of the human experience. It is how we connect with one another, form our identity, capture our history, and heal from trauma.
We've created unique tools for story building based on the collective expertise of our volunteer training leadership team and years of experience working with veterans and military families to develop, record, and share the stories that are meaningful to them, and the stories that help bridge cultural divides.
Whether you are interested in becoming a volunteer, or developing your own story, we have multiple opportunities for involvement, including:
- creative workshops such as Bringing Our Stories to Life, which draw upon both visual and oral storytelling techniques, and the foundational Storytelling Workshop Series
- an interactive guide designed to immerse you in the experience as you work with a trained, military-connected volunteer who will guide you through the interview process.
- a family storytelling retreat offered through our partnership with Camp Resilience
- and our annual Shaped by Service Art Show
Regardless of the storytelling path you take, we are mindful of the vulnerability required to share one's story, and work with each storyteller and interviewer to assess readiness for the storytelling journey, providing support and additional resources when necessary.
