Phil Milgrom

Phil Milgrom

Phil Milgrom, a yoga and meditation instructor and co-owner of The Centered Place in Warren, will teach participants about yoga-based meditation — and lead a group meditation practice — at the March 23 Welcome Home Place.

We’ll also have Mark Avis, the veterans agent from Ware, and the regional representative from Veterans Inc.

Welcome Home Place is a Drop-in and Resource Center for veterans and is held the fourth Saturday of every month from 9 to 11 a.m. at the E2E Center, 79 Main St., in downtown Ware. Welcome Home Place is a program of the Brookfield Institute, whose mission is to prevent veteran suicides by bringing increased well-being through education and training. Welcome Home Place is open to veterans of any era, active-duty military, National Guard members and families and friends.

Milgrom is a believer in the healing powers of meditation — and the research backs him up. A Department of Defense study late last year found that meditation works as well as traditional therapy for veterans affected by trauma.

“Technology confirms the brain changes when you meditate,” Milgrom says. Meditation helps people develop focus, calm their nerves, breathe and “turn inward so you don’t become distracted by your fears and anxiety.”

He plans on a short introduction at Welcome Home Place to explain meditation and its benefits, then he’ll lead a group meditation for about 10 minutes. He will teach an easy, effective meditation practice that is based on yoga’s time-tested teachings. No yoga poses are required; just sitting comfortably in a chair.
